What is a magnesium anode?
Magnesium anodes, also known as soft water anodes, are found in most water tanks and freshwater rivers.
They protect steel by sacrificing electrochemical action. This type of galvanic protection is called "sacrificial"; the magnesium rod (anode) corrodes rather than the can (cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is called "cathodic protection". Because the cathode surface does not rust, the tank is protected. Magnesium anode rods are a very important factor in tank life and should only be removed for inspection or drainage. By regularly inspecting and replacing magnesium anode rods, the life of your water heater can be greatly extended.
