Introduction:
They protect steel by sacrificing electrochemical action. This type of galvanic protection is called "sacrificial"; magnesium rods (anode) corrode instead of cans (cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is referred to as "cathodic protection". The tank is protected because the cathode surface does not rust. The magnesium anode rod is a very important factor in the life of the tank and should only be removed for inspection or draining.
