Introduction:
Magnesium is an active metal, and its electrochemical properties are greatly affected by impurities and alloying elements. When it contains a small amount of impurities, especially impurities with low hydrogen evolution overpotential, the autolysis tendency of magnesium will increase, and the current efficiency will decrease.
Some impurity elements in magnesium, such as Fe, Co, Mn, are solid-dissolved in the magnesium matrix in the form of elemental substances, while other impurities, such as Al, Zn, Ni, Cu and other elements, are easy to form intermetallic compounds with magnesium, No matter what kind of impurity elements, they all show strong cathodic properties relative to magnesium solid solution, which can increase the effective area for hydrogen evolution and further increase the corrosion rate of magnesium.
It is necessary to reduce the content of impurity elements in pure magnesium anodes as much as possible. The mass fraction (%) of impurity elements should be controlled at: Zn<0.03, Mn<0.01, Fe<0.02, Ni<0.001, Cu<0.001, Si<0.01.
But this brings difficulties to the production of pure magnesium anodes. Generally, the alloying method is used, and a certain amount of alloying elements such as Mn, Al, Zn, etc. are added to industrial magnesium, which can eliminate the adverse effects of impurity elements and obtain magnesium alloy sacrificial anode materials with excellent performance.
